Why is it so hard to invest in yourself?

Hi Reader!

Are you really good at investing in other people?

Your kids. Your team. Your community. Do you sometimes invest so much that you find yourself overcommitted and exhausted?

But when it comes to investing in yourself, do you hesitate?

While I was thinking about this email, I caught myself doing exactly that. In big and small ways.

Earlier this year, I was considering a sales and marketing program with someone I know and respect. I had big goals for the year, and I was confident she could help me reach them.

I’d been following her work for a couple of years and thinking seriously about the program for a few weeks. But I was dragging my feet.

It was a not-insignificant financial investment, and there are always so many other things I could spend my money on.

I kept thinking: But do I NEED this? Or am I doing okay on my own?

I finally signed up in late spring. Her guidance, combined with a little help from a sales coach, helped me close eight new clients in just five weeks.

But even before I saw those results, I felt an immediate sense of relief. I knew I’d made the right choice.

And yet, it had taken a lot of internal hemming and hawing to do something I already knew was right.

I recently heard Elise Loehnen talk about how women are conditioned to be “good” — selfless, agreeable, always putting others first. And how that makes it hard for us to even acknowledge what we want, let alone go after it.

So rather than asking for something or investing in ourselves, we wait.

I see women doing this with their businesses all the time.

They know they’ve outgrown their brand. They know their website no longer reflects the caliber of their work. But they wonder whether they really need to change it yet.

Meanwhile, the people who need their expertise aren’t seeing it.

When your brand doesn’t reflect how much you’ve grown and accomplished, potential clients can scroll right past without recognizing you as the expert who could solve their problem.

That’s not just money left on the table. It’s also impact.

When your brand matches your expertise, more people recognize the value of what you do.

You can reach more people. Pursue bigger opportunities. Raise your rates with confidence. And build the thriving business you’ve been imagining.

The websites I build are designed to do more than make your business look good. They showcase your authority and position you as someone whose expertise commands premium prices.

P.S. Not sure if you’re ready for a full Brand Build? The Branding Roadmap is designed for exactly that moment. It’s a 90-minute conversation that gives you clarity on your positioning and messaging. Your Roadmap investment applies in full to any branding package if you decide to move forward.

I have one Branding Roadmap spot left in November and one Brand Build opening in December. After that, I’m booking into 2027.

I was on Pia’s podcast

I recently joined Pia Silva on her No BS Mastery podcast for the second time. ([Listen to our first conversation here). This time we talked about how niching down and changing my business model transformed my work and my life. We also talked about AI, expertise, and why human judgment matters more than ever.

Goodies Just For You

WHAT I’M THINKING ABOUT: So over the weekend, we learned that too many people working inside the AI world believe there’s a meaningful chance AI could wipe out humanity. I realize it’s possible that AI could help cure cancer. But in the meantime, we’re apparently gambling with the future of human life so kids can cheat at school, people can write boring-ass LinkedIn posts, and I can get ChatGPT to do some vacation planning for me. Not really into that tradeoff. If you’re curious what Tristan Harris — co-founder of The Center for Humane Technology, a nonprofit whose mission is to align technology with humanity’s best interests — thinks about all this, check out his conversation with Sam Fragoso on the Talk Easy podcast. I thought it was fascinating, if not particularly reassuring.

WHAT I’M BAKING: My son and his girlfriend just made Trader Joe’s pumpkin loaf and added chocolate chips, which reminded me of this excellent recipe for Chewy Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookie Bars. Side note — my friend posted the other day that Trader Joe’s now has a pumpkin spice chardonnay. Not okay, TJ’s. Not okay.

WHO I’M ADMIRING: My client Constance Zimmer was nominated for an Emmy this year for her performance in Love Story. She didn’t win, but it was a seriously tough category, and she was incredible. The other big news from the Emmys is that five of the six women who won acting awards during the main ceremony were over 50. How awesome is that?! To celebrate, check out Constance’s podcast, Talk Fifty To Me.

Hi Reader! I’m just back from what I’m calling The Empty Nester Distraction Tour with my dear friend Vanessa. We spent 10 days seeing and eating all the things in London and Copenhagen. It was as dreamy as you’d expect. So. Many. Pastries. As you can imagine, reentry has been a little rough. I gave myself a pretty light week, but I could barely swing the bare minimum I was expecting of myself. For example, I’m sending this out a day late. I spent a good part of today just sitting around upset...

Hi Reader! I’m doing a bunch of work on my house right now. My son is moving out, and I’m distracting myself from the 😭 of it all by updating his room. It will still be his, but not… uhm… disgusting. It’s the only room in the house that’s never been professionally painted. I’ve always done that room myself. I don’t know why. The walls and ceiling were covered in earthquake cracks that I kept ignoring and painting over. This week I finally hired a pro to do it right. And it got me thinking...

Hi Reader! AI is so confusing right now. On the one hand, it’s jumping out of testing sandboxes and hacking into other companies’ systems. And an Anthropic engineer was in the news this week after quitting, warning that AI could wipe out humanity. And on the other hand, the more time I spend trying to get AI to make my life easier, the more impressed I am with my own human brain. I’ve never felt smarter in my life. So assuming humanity isn’t wiped out — who is going to come out okay in this...
